A view from early in the 1900s inside the famous Binns Road Meccano Factory in Liverpool. These large-scale photos were donated to the FHHC by National Museums Liverpool in 2022.

There are quite a few books out there about the Meccano factory. One really good insight into the history of the Meccano Company set up by Frank Hornby is the book ‘Frank Hornby Notes and Pictures’ by Jim Gamble who is a Trustee of the Frank Hornby Charitable Trust. The book is out of print so second-hand copies need to be obtained.

Here’s a link to a sad YouTube video - 1980 Thames TV programme - Meccano Factory Demise

which details the very last days of Liverpool’s world-famous Binns Road Meccano Factory.

But just 5 years before closure Airfix, the last owners of the Meccano factory, were trying to expand the business

A press cutting from 1974 (Liverpool Echo or Daily Post?) publicising an additional Meccano Factory in Aintree, to the north of Liverpool

And a press advert in overtly sexist terms, as we see it these days, recruiting female workers for the new Aintree factory in 1974
